Conformation

Desirable traits in donkeys are similar to those in horses, with a few differences. Donkeys tend to be narrower and stand up more vertically off their hooves, to name a couple. When I look at donkeys I check these points, listed below in order of my preference.

  • Good Legs, Round TopLine
    Bite:
the front teeth should line up almost exactly. An animal with a bite more than ¼” off in either direction is unregisterable and definitely not breeding stock. It can, however, be a great pet.
  • Legs: the legs should be straight and “at four corners”, meaning that the donkey should have a broad, square look rather than a narrow, pinched one.
  • Rump: the donkey should have a round, broad rump rather than one that makes you think of barn rafters. The rump should have a rounded appearance when viewed from behind as well as from the side.
  • Topline: the donkey’s back should be straight: not bumpy and not running uphill or downhill.

  • Head: the head should fit the rest of the body: neither too large or too small. Big ears are always fun. The donkey should have large, expressive eyes and a sweet countenance.
  • Disposition: this is seldom a problem with donkeys, as most of them have great attitudes. However, I would not own or breed a donkey that didn’t.
I have never met the perfect donkey. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, such as a great rump and a poor quality head. When I select a donkey I must look at the whole and see how it all adds up. If I am looking for breeding stock I must look to the genetics behind as well, because the value of a breeding animal is in what it can produce, and that relies heavily on the consistency of it's predecessors. That is why some breeding individuals are worth more than others, even if the animals in front of you look very much the same. Breeding quality animals should score high on this list, while these traits have much less relevance when shopping for a pet. The perfect pet donkey often looks a lot like “Eeyore”.
